Burning TABs, replacing with poly. Is it REALLY that easy? 200

If you're on a budget as you say and the car is rarely driven, just leave them alone. I drove one w/ bad tabs for 2+ years. Handling was unpleasant on rough roads and I didn't trust it at speed in wet weather but cost was the deciding factor so I just worked around it.

A friend has one that's had bad tabs for, oh, 10 years. He drives it in town, low speeds, once/ week at most. He doesn't care.
