Burning TABs, replacing with poly. Is it REALLY that easy? 200

I like the idea of the hole saw, think I'll try that next time. Meanwhile, I've done several sets of poly bushings with a hybrid sort of method. I start with everything unbolted and in the air of course. Then I drape the emergency brake housings with wet rags--very important step. I use just a propane torch from the inside of the bushings and all I do is heat the center tube enough to remove it and the scrap metal--and any loose pieces that want to come out. I put newspaper down first. Since I don't actually burn out the bushings, there is minimal smoke, but any melted rubber does make a mess. The flame does tend to "jet" through the tube though, which is why I cover the e-brake tubes. Once the center is out, I use a 2" wire brush on a good strong drill to remove everything from the housing. It binds and grabs and shakes like hell, but the effect is that it bounces around in the tube and grinds all the rubber out, leaving a clean inner shell. Wear heavy gloves to avoid blisters (ask me how I know). If you use a cheap, light duty drill, don't expect it to do more than four bushings. The other way to look at this is to use that old, half-worn-out drill---and who cares if it never works again? Expect to spend half an hour with the wire brush per side to get the housing really clean. I'll bet the hole saw would speed that up, leaving little to be done with the wire brush. Installing the bushings takes only minutes.
