There usually isn't much in the filter, it is actually a screen to catch loose nuts and bolts (LOL). Just be careful, when you pull the screen off you will be rewarded with another pint of fluid pouring all over you :)
The screen is reusable, but I would get another pan gasket.
Actually, I would only drain the fluid, top it off and drive it a little, and flush it again.
