"There are lots of ways to go when it comes to cams in the B18/20. Give a lot of thought to your intended use of the car and choose wisely. A ripping cam in a dailey driver might get tiresome while an economy cam in a weekend warrior may not satisfy. Metal timing gearsets are available but the original fibre gear last a long time--that's what I use in my sometime trackcar 144S. Whatever you do be sure to -- 1. replace the thrust plate under the timing gear -- 2. Move the spacer ring from the nose of the old cam to the nose of the new one (locked up cam is the result of not installing the spacer) --- 3. ABSOLUTELY replace the lifters."
Well, earlier this morning I went down to IPD and picked up a stock D-Grind cam for a little better beatheability, fiber gear, retaining plate, all 8 lifters, and all the other stuff I need to carry out my switch, like head gasket, gaskets for fuel pump and distributor, felt timing cover seal, paper timing cover gasket. I have some new pushrods here in a box that I got with the car when I bought it that I might put in. This is just a daily driver that sometimes sees freeway use so I think I'll be okay. Chris Horn is gonna help me by way of a couple gadgets that will ease my cam replacement.
Wish me luck.
