Update,

After 3 days on a trickle charger, I put the battery back in. All idiot lights came on with ignition on, engine off. I said the h----, with it and replaced the voltage regulator and bypassed the D1 wire from the alternator to the junction box on the firewall. I hope I've chased the ghost out for now.
