Ignition Timing Issues All Over Again... 120-130

After basic timing the maximum advance is set centrifugally by the advance mechanism. Engines differ and so does fuel but setting the maximum advance at about 30-32º at about 3k rpm should get you in the ball park. It certainly shouldn't carry on going up to 40º. I'd make sure that the advance retard mechanism is clean, lubricated and working smoothly throughout its range. It should add about 20º of advance from a slow tickover to about 3k rpm. With the engine warm, set the max advance and then see what it comes back down to at tickover.
