If you change distributors back does it time right?
I can't think of anything that would make that much difference except maybe one
of the new systems where timing is electronically controlled, which I am pretty sure
is not what you have.
So on that basis, maybe you have slipped your pulley and the marks are now maybe
20° advanced compared to the actual timing.
Again, maybe just for kicks, put the engine at TDC and see where your timing marks are.
