I did that when I put the new cam and new cam gear in a few months ago... Up until I washed the engine bay yesterday, everything worked awesomely. I am simply afraid that water messed something up somewhere... Someone suggested replacing cap and rotor so I figured I'd try that, unless someone disagrees.
To me it seems that direct drive cam and crank gears as well as direct drive on the distributor gear makes it nearly impossible to "slip a tooth" without considerable damage elsewhere. Maybe I'm wrong. But in this case, moisture seems to move my enemy somewhere.
Out of curiosity, what are signs of a failing coil?
