It has been years since rode a motorcycle with points but I always carried a spare set and a spare condenser for just his reason...I was not good enough with the old points ignition to fix it on the side of the road.
It helped that the points were on a "points plate" that had the condenser, and points all mounted solidly. I would mount everything and get my neighbor who was a pro at that sort of stuff help me set the points, then I unbolted the whole assembly and put it is zip-lock baggy and re-installed the original plate.
From what I remember, when the condenser goes south you just start burning the points very quickly...but these are very fuzzy memories.
