Starter service socket 700

Man, you guys are just awesome. I'm heading over there in a bit, but a few more q's:

1. So to test the ignition itself, with the key in III, I should see 12V between test socket and... ??? the car frame, right?

2. And to test the starter: Running a wire from the Solenoid terminal 50 to the battery... Do I get it all hooked up before I turn the key? What is the order of operations? Do I connect to the solenoid, turn the key (to position..? ) and then tap the wire to the battery? Okay, I might go snag a classy push-button switch. I'm almost hoping it's my ignition switch so I can run a push-button under the dash.
