Uncle Eliotporter

Uncle Art suggests the Bougicord brand of engine position, or crank, sensor, may be faulty. Bosch is best, as Uncle Art suggests.

You must prise and pull the socket connector / circuit board assembly from the plastic housing and inspect the solder connection for crack. Simple solder session to reflow. I also add solder to the mass.

Sorry you had to be towed. Why we are here to keep all of us rolling in the Swedish Iron.

Code 1-3-1 on socket 2, Bosch LH-Jetronic and newer (Motronic) - A failure of the engine position, or crank, position sensor. (RPM is a misnomer, slightly. This is not, yet does serve as a tach to the ECUs.)

Replace the engine position, or crank, position sensor. On top of the bell housing behind the engine block.

If you have failed engine and transmission mounts, the engine sags rearward. Making access difficult.

I use a scissor jack without a saddle, like the Volvo 240/700/900 scissor jack, on padding, between the firewall, or engine compartment bulkhead, and the rear most #4 runner on the exhaust manifold. Gently open it to move the engine forward.

Disconnect sensor lead from the host wire harness at the socket. Verify a clean connector and clean connector pins!

With extensions you can use a ten mm six point hex socket. Loosen the bolt, yet do NOT lose the bolt and washer! Grab it as it loosen and pull it up with your finger, and pull out the failed engine position, or crank, position sensor.

Get the Bosch engine, or crank, position sensor. May use some tacky butyl rubber to lower the sensor into the socket at the top of the bellhousing. Verify proper thread interface alignment. DO NOT CROSS THREAD! Tighten and apply factory specified torque.

Reconnect the sensor lead to the host Volvo 240 wire harness and secure as it was by the factory. On some 700-900 series you may find clips that secure to the B23/230 oil dipstick tube while the other end secures to the sensor lead to lessen movement in turbulent air as the Volvo 240 moves. Ensuring a longer duty cycle for the application.

You may be able to find quality used engine position sensor at the junkyard. Low mileage replacements recently replaced on the Volvo before it ended up in the junkyard.

FCP has the Bougicord. At 10$, this is made in China JUNK.

Call the parts guy and get Bosch. Volvo OEM number is 1306696. Yet Volvo OEM was Bougicord, when it was made in Europa.

Say no to made in Chinese junk. Cheers,

Again, apologies you were towed. Bummer.

Questions and comments?
