Make sure you have vacuum to your booster.

Really sounds like it is NOT working OK.

Get a functioning valve to replace the nonfunctional one.

(Try resetting it first.)

Brake lines could very likely be bad - they swell shut and act like

check valves but allow you to brake OK, just keep brakes from releasing

after braking.
