Theory? What theory? It's practice.
I've driven cars (mine, several of 'em) with toe-out, and they're squirrely, all over the road. Sensitive, oversteer.
When I adjust 'em for zero toe-in/out at rest, they feel like they have zero toe-in/out on the road. The tires show no wear, the handling's true, solid, straight. I've done this for years.
Most everybody recommends a tad of toe-in, like 1/4 degree -- or whatever -- because it makes the car handle very well with a bit of understeer, and does not create significantly more tire wear or fuel consumption. But zero toe-in is very easy to measure at home and rides fine on the road.
