Years ago, that's precisely how the brake assist unit on my first 122 failed...horrendous and awfull sounds from the motor, and plumes of white smoke from the exhaust...welcome to Girling Mr. Phelps!

Simmy;

I bet, and sincerely hope that's what happened to you...disconnect (and recycle) that assist unit, and get used to pushing the brake pedal just a bit harder.
