Engine Troubles

An even quicker shade tree compression check: Pull the plug wire and crank it around and around a few times. Listen for unevenness as the starter pulls through each compression. Won't tell you the general health of the engine but it is a quick indication of something happening in only one or two cylinders (like a burned valve/headgasket/holed piston).
