stalling 700 1988

James,

I struggled with the exact same problem, though I have a 1990 240 wagon.

I went through a lot of difficulty, and I hope you will be spare of that.

Finally I solved the problem (it's been 200 miles without problems so far), by
changing the power stage. I am not sure if your cars as this.

It's also called the ignition control unit. I think this solved the problem. Also I am not sure if you have this on your car. For the 200 series, this system came on in 89 with the EZ-116 system. Otherwise, I would look for problems in the hall sensor unit.

Just look by the battery and see if you see a thin Bosch electronic unit attached to the fender.

For replacement I would just get something on internet, I found them to be as cheap as $75 on performancemotorcars.com. (type in the part number)

I don't think it can be a fuel problem. If you have this problem with a full tank of gas, then it's not likely to be the fuel pumps.
