I have used a "Beartracker" BCT 7 by Uniden for many years. It's basically a scanner radio for police , wheather and emergency frequencies but has a signal that beeps and blinks a red light when a Highway Patrol unit is within 3 miles provided that their radio is on. Saved my butt a few times.
