Problem Solved:
I'd love to blame this on the guy who had the car before..but I have my suspicions...about myself. About six months ago (funny, right about when that noise started) I replaced the fuel filter. At the same time I replaced all of the rubber fuel hoses on the car. I certainly thought I got everything back the way it had been, in which case it was his fault. But after reading the advice from my original post, I removed the pump to examine it and, in the process, looked in my Haynes manual. "Gee, it looks like the fuel filter is supposed to go after the pump, NOT BEFORE THE PUMP" Switched things to the way they're supposed to be and the noise was no more. Thanks for all the tips...I did make sure to check the regulator and ensure that all the front-to-back lines were clear.
