You need a spanner wrench to remove the three plugs under the overdrive filter.

Use type F ATF, a type F rated synthetic, or synthetic 10W/30 engine oil. I use synthetic engine oil, and the transmissions shift better than with type F ATF. Some people use Redline MTW in their M46s, but I would be cautious because the MTW is not the best for the cone clutches. Slippage has been reported by some turbo owners using MTW.
