Distributor problem 120-130

I have always used a cheap 12V light wired to a pair of alligator clips as I have never thought to see/hear the snap. Of course I was shown the method with the distributor cap ON so I wouldn't have now, would I? Do be careful not to let the dist. sit at the "break point" with the ignition on for long as I have welded points together that way (serious "DOH!").
