Out of curiosity, were the tires wearing unevenly too?
I can logic a plausible explanation.
The combination of drag and vibration on the bad bearing was causing a slight bind in the suspension such that additional load was placed on the pinion. This, combined with an unfortunate harmonic and (perhaps) a slightly out of spec gear lash caused the poor thing to bang around on its bearing and added additional heat.
Its still far out.
Mike!
p.s. I have had more problems (not like this, however) caused by not checking the front bearings than any other single item.
