It's not impossible to fit an electric gauge in the cluster, where the old manual gauge was. My 544 had an electric gauge mounted under dash, with about the same sweep as the stock one in in when I bought it. It was some cheapo brand, but it worked. I got a wild hair one day and took the speedo cluster out, removed the stock temp gauge, and took the face off it. I then removed the electric gauge, pried it out of it's can and fit the stock faceplate on it. Then, with a little fabrication, the electric gauge got mounted where the mechanical gauge used to be. I wish I had my camera that day so I could show you but the whole process only took about three hours. I remember needing a drill and some vacuum hose to insulate the electrical connectors. If you get an electric gauge with a red needle, it looks 100% stock when you're done.
