I think you two are talking "at odds." Matt was referring to the rear end of the shaft. Checking for the proper function of the slip-joint so that you don't get binding when the suspension cycles.
The transmission end should be very close or you are introducing longitudinal loads that will wear something out somewhere! Of course, there are the rubber mounts that allow a lot of motion fore-aft so it isn't critical... just so long as you aren't pulling them together with the bolts or using a pry-bar to get them lined up!
