ditto, i had a 940 that was an absolute money pit, the 700's were better than the 9...a bit, the 144 was awsome!
never buy the first year of manufacture of ANY model
but I would avoid any turbo car, and any of the 4wd ones (the 4wd on them is a toy system its a marketing ploy!)
IMHO my 95 805 knocks spots of the build quality of any ofthe other bricks i have had knowledge of (1*144, 1*240, 3*740's 1*940) witht he possible exception of the 144, but he rust proofing on the 850 is shed loads better!
The 850 is a fine car, the s/v 70's are too (ignoring the fly by wire issues), FWD is just fine provided you know how to drive it and drive accordingly (rwd is just as nasty if you dont know how to drive it)...
unfortunatly the t's and 4wd cars tend to get thrashed before a considerate ower gets hold and their engines/drivetrains are IMHO just too stressed, and that head in the engien bay just KILLS electronics...take turbo car for a run on the black top, pop the hood at night and see the turbo GLOW...thats a LOT of heat!
