There is nothing wrong with Japanese cars, in fact, Lexus has a great reputation when it comes to customer complaints. It's just that they can be so boring...
If you are commuting to school, then you need a car that will start every morning, get good gas milage, and not require any "shop" time. If you change the oil and do your own plugs, wires, etc. then you are ahead of the game.
A dull 4 cylinder engine and a stick shift is all you need. Anything else will get you in trouble with the troopers, or make you cry every time some dinkus brain puts another door ding on the side of your car.
Remember, when you buy a used car you will need 4 new tires and a new set of brakes. Your 300ZX is a nice car, unless the rust has started to show. You should be able to replace pads and rotors yourself - it's easy. And if you wax your car, it will slow down the rust. Besides, a Volvo with ABS and Traction Control won't do donuts in the snow!
A Volvo has more personality than a Japanese car, and that is why we like them. They may be a stickler for maintenance, but it doesn't show it's age until it crosses 200,000 miles.
