What's with my windshield wipers? SAFETY PROBLEM! 850 1994

If my memory serves, you could loosen the rubber cowling that covers the wiper compartment (without removing it). That might allow you to reach in and grab the wiper shaft from inside. Then you could tighten the nut while preventing the shaft from rotating and being potentially damaged.
