The simple solution is buy a new arm--you can get them from FCP Groton. The spline is conical and hard steel, the arm is soft metal. When you put the arm on and tighten it down, the spline cuts grooves in the arm to hold it. If it once works loose and the spline rotates back and forth a few times in the arm, it opens the gap which you might fix by tightening down again, but I found this to be a loosing battle. Get a new, fresh arm (about $40) and you'll be a happy camper. I did and I am...
I'm quite sure the major cause for this in snow country is the way snow packs up at the end of the arm travel stressing it and eventually working it loose.
