Need A/C Diagnosis

The compressor on my 940 won't run. If I unplug the two-wire plug at the receiver/dryer switch, and plug it back in, it will run for a few seconds and then cut out. Same thing if I unplug this plug and connect the wires with a paper clip. If I break the connection and redo it, the compressor will again run for a few seconds. Did this over and over, and same thing always happens --won't run for more than a few seconds. It does not "cycle", i.e. off and on, as they sometimes do -- it just stays off unless you unplug and re-plug the connector on the receiver/dryer, or cross the terminals, and then it runs only for a few seconds. Worked fine last year. Any idea what's up ?
