My newest problem started the Friday before last shortly after I had installed a replacement Crane Ignition Brain. I installed the crane in the cabin under the dashboard.
The car stalled while idling, but quickly restarted and I was on my way. I thought it was time to replace the fuel filter anyway and seeing volume of fuel in the new filter suggested that it could have been a fuel supply problem.
On Tuesday, it stalled again on my way to work and refused to restart for several minutes. It stalled twice more last week and refused to restart for a couple minutes. This ruled out a clogged filter. My fuel economy crashed again and based on my weekend fill-up, I must have been getting about 10 mpg...
I added a bottle of heet to the fuel system in case of water contamination and had completely refueled on Friday. The car stalled again on Saturday. On Sunday, I tried my original Allison brain unit.
Suspecting the new Crane brain was the problem with stalling and fuel economy, I swapped in my re-soldered crane unit but installed it back on the pedal box. I thought all was well, but this morning, the car was giving me some hesitation, and again stalled at the same intersection where I stalled last Tuesday. After several minutes, I got the car going again and am now at work.
I suspect an ignition problem, but when my original Allison unit failed the symptoms were different. It was misfiring, had no power at all, and died completely all at once.
That I have two units of different ages with exactly the same problem is suspect, but not impossible.
I've confirmed fuel getting to the carbs and in the tank. I've used fuel from two different gas stations. I've removed, cleaned and re-gapped my sparks, checked carb adjustement and hooked up a timing light to check for my ignition pulse.
I think this is an ignition problem, but the same problem with two different units makes me ask for other ideas.
Tonight I plan to put my points dizzy back in, and if the problem continues, I'll know it is something else - although I've no idea what.
