Knock Knock... 120-130 1967

Hello All:

1967 Volvo 122S Wagon. B18D Type III lump.

Not to beat a dead horse here, but one or two of you might recall that I lost a fiber timing gear last year, successfully replaced it, and months later heard a quiet knock immediately after a valve job, perhaps or perhaps not coincidentally.

At any rate, the knock has been getting louder and I ran it by a family of South African Amazon (the Volvo kind) fanatics, and everyone, including the 85-year-old matriarch (yes, that is an 'm') listened through a hose and said "yep, that's coming from your timing gear alright".

I am going back into the front of the lump on Saturday, the deal being that I have to have this thing back together for a trip the following Saturday to Pennsylvania. The thrust plate has never been removed but it looks good, clean with no decay. What I ask of you all is this:

Can someone please explain to me exactly how the thrustplate, thrustplate washer, cam gear, etc. all interface so that I can check absolutely everything? I want to check all clearances (please explain exactly where the tooth flank clearance should be measured and also how to measure end float). Let me know what the woodruff key should look like in its proper position. Any miniscule detail that I should check, I will.

Sorry to bother you guys over and over with this issue, but I really would like to put it to bed. I have a floor to POR-15, brake pads and shoes to change and I need to get to the ball joints too. A thousand thanks to you all.

Cheers,

Jeff Pucillo
