Jeff,

I think all you're seeing is that the cam has slid backwards slightly in the process of removing the gear. Tension from the valve springs is keeping you from being able to pull it forward by hand, but torquing the gear on will surely pull it back into position.

It can go back about 1/2" before you're in danger of knocking out the plug on the back end, so I wouldn't worry about that.

How much is "a small amount of wear" on the plate? Was there anything wrong with the gear itself?
