Hello Peter:

Love the advice, as well as the writing style. "First port of call" - fantastic.

The cam follower theory is VERY interesting. Worth a look, despite the odds.

I did run the engine without the belt. Waterpump and dynamo are out of the lineup.

Crank was never reground, rods were never out. No one had ever been in Virginia prior to my ownership, hence her name.

I need to get with some other B18 operators to see if Shayne's Singer Machine theory is right. Of course I hope it is, but I have spent a lot of time chasing this. The sound is much more of a dock-dock-dock than a tick-tick-tick or a chug-chug-chug.
