12v on a battery is not enough it should read more. but that is not your problem. it sounds like your generator/alternator gave up and keeping running the car drained your battery. your lucky you made it to where you went.
I do think though that you have a short in one of your ?tors (gen, alt, reg)
Try a jumper cable directly to your starter from a good source. If it turns start working from your regulator alternator back to the battery and rule out unwanted conductivity. (contacts fried together in the V-reg)
Does anything come on when you turn the key?
