Help! 200 1989

Just verify this before you start pulling the starter motor:

When key is turned and it whirrs - have brother or buddy tell you if the alternator belts and a/c belt etc. are turning.

If not turning then you know crankshaft is not turning, so you can assume the starter drive gear is not engaging the flywheel. (Which is what we suspect is happening). Because the accessory belts are driven directly off the crankshaft pulley.

If on the other hand, the accessory belts are turning, then the crank IS turning with the starter motor and the lack of cam movement (which you reported earlier) tells you that the timing belt is broken.

I suspect the starter drive gear is not engaging - due to a hangup in the gear mechanism or stripped gear, either on the drive gear or on the flywheel or both. But verify whether the accessory belts are turning.
