Was the 14" at idle a nice steady 14 or did it flutter? If it was a steady vacuum signal that is the end of that avenue; it is what it is. But, if it fluttered around 14", that bears investigation. Derek's idea of crankcase pressure in the intake is intriguing. If the vacuum gauge needle was dancing around, try venting the crankcase to atmosphere and plugging the vacuum hose. I have a feeling though that you would have reported an unsteady vacuum.
BTW, if you posted it I missed it; what was the final solution to the overheating problem?
