"...I rather doubt we'll be putting another 150 KMi on this car..."
Dave, I wouldn't be so sure about that. Soon after you purchase your first FWD you'll look back upon the 940 with a new-found appreciation. About a year ago we purchased a nice 2005 S80 T2.5. Now I will have to say there are a few things that make it a nicer car than the 740; 1.) It HAULS A$$. (Just ask my wife and the Sheriff's officers she's met lately.) 2.) It will tell you what the temp is outdoors. 3.)Rain-sensing wipers (best feature on the whole car) 4.)Uhhh, I can't think of any more right now.
But when compared to the 740, the S80 has less room in the cabin especially the back seat, a smaller and less accessable trunk, a wider turning radius (after driving RWD's for many years, that's a biggy to me), less mechanic-friendly (looking forward to, excuse me, looking SIDEWAYS to the first T-belt R&R), and I just don't trust a car that's smarter than me - the electronics are daunting.
I recently decided I was going to consolidate vehicles by selling my 740 sedan and my Dodge Dakota pickup and buy one Volvo wagon. My wife couldn't understand why I didn't want a V70 type of wagon (which would have been much easier to find). I said "No thanks" and looked far and wide for a decent RWD. I ended up traveling 378 miles one way to purchase a 92 745 NA with 105,000 miles on it. The biggest problem with a long-range purchase is that the seller knows you don't want to go home empty-handed so they don't have to flex much on the price. (Am I a sucker, or what?)
Anywaaaaaayyyyyyy, the point of this whole rambling thing is that I think you may want to reconsider the notion that there's a eminent end to your 940 ownership. End of story.
