940 In-Tank Fuel Pump Failure: Duh!!

For the record: One 1995 940 B230F Bosch fuel pump recently deceased at 147 KMi. Other 1995 940 B230FT Bosch pump still alive at 180 KMi.

In its final days, the Bosch pump was kind enough to stay running once started and when shut down it had to cool its heels for a couple of hours before it would start again. Beating on the tank (especially directly on the tank sending unit) will sometimes jog a motor on its windings enough to allow it to run -if nothing else it makes you feel useful and helps vent frustration. So, as we don't plan on taking any major driving trips in the near future with the B230FT, I think I'll take my chances and not bother with preemptive fuel pump replacement. Having said that, I'm now probably doomed.

Note, I was offered (and went for) a non-Bosch aftermarket "OEM" pump at a very attractive price. It came in a Hella box, but is stamped as made by Walbro, both reasonably reputable names. This is a relatively wimpy looking little pump, not much beefier than an in-tank pre-pump. To fit the in-tank pump bracket, it comes wrapped in a fat foam sleeve. I rather doubt this pump will last as long as a Bosch, but at half the price and for a relatively easy install (for me anyway) I was willing to take the chance as I rather doubt we'll be putting another 150 KMi on this car.
