I have a '92 965 -wonderfully comfortable road car, good power for a family car, and if I'd known what kinds of problems the early 960s had, I'd never have touched it. If you are looking at the 960, look only at the last couple of years; the later ones were cured of many of the earlier problems, and are great cars. When the engine finally melts down on mine, I'll look at a GM or Ford engine transplant because the rest of the vehicle will last forever.
Alternatively, there are a lot of bolt-ons available to perk up the NA 940.
Whatever you do, study the 700/900 FAQs and do a search or two on this site--just about every question that could be asked has been, and the BTDTs are posted.
