You did not mention the 940 turbo! I believe that they were sold in the U.S. through the '95 model year, so there should still be many solid examples on the road with fewer than 100k miles. The powerplant is the venerable B230FT, as found in the 740 turbo. Unfortunately, the 940T is only available with an automatic transmission - the AW-71, as used in the 240 and 740 turbos for several years. It is a 3-speed gearbox w/overdrive, and later models (dubbed AW-71'L') incorporate a lock-up torque convertor.
A late model 940 will also have anti-lock brakes & driver's airbag.
This would be my choice, because they are incredibly simple and parts are readily available on the aftermarket. The 940 is the last of the DIY-friendly RWD Volvos, and will run for hundreds of thousands of miles if well maintained.
