The above comments are food for thought.

I've had a transient coolant smell when first starting my car (1994 940) for some time now and am wondering if I'm up for the dreaded heater core replacement at some stage. I assume the 940 is equally as time consuming as the 740 as regards heater core replacement.

When heater cores let go, typically how spectacular and sudden is the process ?
