Hi Alex,
Trust your senses. But yes, I was trying to explain the smell by suggesting fuel may not have been excessive, just unignited in one or more cyls. The dipstick tell you anything? Also, having a lot of exposure to drivability problems discussed on the forums, I know I tend to jump over the basics in favor of the exotic when running down the possibilites in our own cars. Especially when we can't lay our hands on them at the moment.
If it were stuck in an "you're idling" state, this would trigger the overrun cutoff above some arbitrary RPM, right?
There's one I can say I've never seen-- a TPS switch stuck closed. I can assure you I have only guesses as to how that might affect open throttle operation, but it should idle nice. It all goes through the AMM, so idle valve or not, you would think mixture wouldn't be hosed that badly. Tell me about the overrun cutoff for idling; I must have missed that from somewhere.
