Considering a Volvo V70-XC70 1998

I lost count after 35 problems and recalls in the first 50k miles. As if by magic when I passed the 50k mark and the extended warranty that I was scared into buying started, it's been fine since. A few minor problems. I suspect when the 100k mark passes the fun will begin again.

Consumer reports says "Avoid" which is interesting because they said "Recommended" when I bought the car!

I plan on keeping it for a while, love the seats, it's a lot of fun to drive. Too much fun, perhaps, because Volvo claims to have given the latest generation more power but road tests show they have slowed them down a bit! Amazing!

Since I live in the Northeast, and safety is a serious concern, there are 3 choices for me - Mercedes, SAAB and Volvo. Mercedes doesn't offer a manual transmission in most of their lines, and so that leaves SAAB and Volvo. So I'm considering another Volvo, but not without some apprehension. Too bad Toyota didn't buy the company instead of Ford!
