"Q? - the '86 (and '87) 740 have the BF230 engine with the distrib at back end of camshaft. Are all the 240s w distrib at side of block considered BF23 engines? Some of the parts websites seem to list some 240s as having BF230 engines.

Must be typos. There are no "BF" engines. The B23 was predecessor to B230F that came in '85. B230F can have either distributor location. All 240's have block mounted. Most 700/900 have head mounted. I'm not real familiar with 700/900 but have heard of some '90's vintage 940's with block mounted distributors.
