The fuel pump on most D-jet cars is below the level of the fuel in the tank
so that once primed a 240 pump will work OK. In fact I have seen 240s run
when the in-tank pump was dead, so even though it is supposed to be a "pusher",
apparently once it has fuel in it it works OK. Most 240s have the pump lower
than the level of the tank also, so maybe all the in-tank pump is supposed to
do is prime the main pump.
