I've owned the car for 45k miles (175k total). No ideal about the history before that. The alternator is labelled as Volvo/Bosch so could be original. I couldn't really see in detail the contact points of the brushes but based on a quick look with a mirror and flashlight in the dark before I installed the regulator I didn't see anything obviously amiss.

I assume a bad battery wouldn't case problems with the charging circuit ?
