Flashing is probably and intermittent connection. I suspect it's in the ground path shown in red. Maybe those "on brush assy" connections.

When the turning alternator rotor gets current from the regulator, the output goes through the diode assemblies. One assembly to the big red wire (main output) and one to the lamp connection. So the lamp then has the same voltage at both ends and so does not light.
