By any chance did you check the brushes in the one from Autozone to see if it had the quality copper impregnated brushes?
It is best to know you have a quality replacement.
If they sold you a warranty, you will be the one doing the labor, again soon or possibly the next buyer!
When I go picking at the junk yards, I look for newly replaced alternators. I get down in the gravel or grab a car seat and pull the brush pack out. It tells me how many miles are left and the quality of the rebuild the PO bought. It helps me read up on the PO's maintenance history of the cars overall mileage and hopefully, the quailty of the other components that might worth picking from it.
Glad you found out that it was the slip rings!
It is good lesson to learn and you have the hundred dollars that you kept away from a mechanic's boat payment, eh!
