Hiya Onkel Udo II,
Thank you kindly for your most splendid commentary on what is a new model year 2017 Volvo 240 series. I agree.
Without reading the comments posts subsequent to yours, here, I hope Volvo build them, sells them a baker's dozen to the innumerable auto-enthused cued up at the dealership!
I'd wonder how unibody construction would change, if to the more efficient for assembly? I'd not want to say it, yet maybe thinner sheet and plate steel, of only improved quality metallurgy. Volvo metallurgy in their sheet, plate, engine blocks, and light alloys, optics, glass (the RWD era) remains, in my humbly opinion, never met, and certainly never to be surpassed. The philosophy in all facets remains unparalleled. I'll include the concept of automotive luxury as withstanding.
I don't care for luxury. The 1975 244 DL I had was as luxurious as I'd ever need. I only put of with the leather seats in the 92 GL since it came with it (Well Lexol-soaked, unless you folks know better leather care). I don't care at all for leather. The final four 240 years, with the LH Jet, is, to me supremely comfortable. Luxuriously so. The cloth is best.
We'd keep a solid Volvo iron-alloy red block, maybe? Would we want pressed in white block alloy cylinder, that seem problematic, yet may other auto or engine manufacturers are better. The redblock, it seems the Volvo 240 soul, or manitou, is in there (and in the body). But for weight versus horsepower .... like in the last four years. You mention emissions controls as they are now.
I like the low pressure turbo, yet how's maintenance for us? I like the maintenance. I also like that we get 50 more or so ft-lbs torque and hp.
Racing RWD Volvo 240s must be fun. I'd handled a few 140s on the track in the bay area in 1988 all too briefly. Doubt I'd have nerve to do it now. Really fun. The folks are really cool, also. "talkin' about carbs .... !!!" Like the BMW design, also. The closest to Volvo at the time. Least BMW makes RWD and steel block engines today.
Sorry to go on so.
Thanks,
Sundae Duffed.
