There is nothing wrong with your reasoning Ken. In all my years I have never been able to notice a difference between hot and cold adjustments, and Volvo has always stated that the lash may be set at either temperature. Or something in between I guess.
Most modern engines require a great deal of time to do a valve adjustment, and a lot of dismantling, so for a Lexus V-8, stone cold is the way to go. Only engines where access to the adjustment can be achieved quickly, does one find a hot lash adjustment. ( on Jaguar and Aston Martin, the damn camshafts have to be removed to get access to the shims!)
