Hard to tell where the noise is comming from, but a loose wheel is never good. You'd have to check to see if it's just the wheel, or the drum, or play on the shaft itself (quite unlikely imo)
If the half shafts of both your axles have 10 splines, I'm sure you can swap them over and re-shim them. I don't see why that would be better then using the old half shafts though.
Also, I never heard of non-tapered half shafts, how is the drum attached to the axle?
